This Isn’t Boot Camp—It’s a Starting Point
If you’re nervous about taking your first off-road motorcycle class, you’re not alone. A lot of riders come to training with the idea that they’ll be thrown into something intense—like obstacle courses, aggressive drills, or being told to “keep up or get out.” That’s not what we do here.
At Sivlik ADV, our entry-level ADV basics class is designed to build your confidence from the ground up. It’s a calm, supportive space where you can learn how your bike behaves off pavement and how to stay in control when things get loose.
When You Arrive: Calm, Not Chaos
The day starts with a proper welcome and introduction. We talk through the class, explain what you’ll be learning, and walk the land together. Our goal is to create a safe, low-pressure environment from the very beginning.
We also go over the bikes themselves—how they’re set up, what adjustments we can make for comfort, and what to expect during each exercise. You don’t need to know any of this ahead of time. That’s what the class is for.
Real-World Skills, Step by Step
The training builds progressively. Each exercise is simple and focused. Once you’ve got it down, we move to the next one. This lets you learn at your pace, without ever feeling overwhelmed or rushed. And it means nobody’s “falling behind.”
Expect to cover:
- How to balance and maneuver at slow speeds
- Body position for stability and control
- Smooth, progressive braking—front and rear
- Throttle control on dirt and gravel
- Turning techniques that build confidence, not fear
- How to pick up a bike safely (if you want to learn it)
You’ll see each skill demonstrated first. Then you’ll try it yourself. I’ll watch, give pointers, and help you make adjustments as you go. The point isn’t perfection—it’s progress.
No Pressure, No Judgment
We don’t yell. We don’t expect you to already know how to do anything. And we definitely don’t expect you to perform like you’re training for a race.
Some riders drop their bike during a drill—that’s totally normal. In fact, we learn more from little mistakes than from getting it right the first time. My role as an instructor is to guide you through those moments, not make you feel bad about them.
The goal is always the same: that you leave more confident than when you showed up.
What to Bring (and What Not to Stress About)
You don’t need the fanciest gear or the latest ADV bike. If you have basic protective equipment and a bike that fits you reasonably well, we’ll work with what you’ve got.
We’ll also cover how to set up your bike for off-road comfort—bar positioning, controls, and other little tweaks that make a big difference.
Recommended items to bring:
- DOT-approved helmet (ADV or dual-sport)
- Riding boots that cover the ankle
- Gloves, jacket, and comfortable pants
- Hydration (we’ll take plenty of breaks)
- A spirit of patience—you’re here to learn
One Day Later, You’re Tour-Ready
Most of our students take a tour the day after training. That’s by design. Once you’ve learned the core skills and had time to practice in a safe setting, you’re ready for real-world riding.
Our tours stick to easy dirt roads and scenic blacktop—no surprises, no advanced terrain. Just the kind of riding that helps you build confidence, soak up the desert beauty, and feel proud of what you’ve accomplished.
You Belong Here—From Day One
If you’ve been holding back from ADV training because you thought it would be too intense or too advanced, let me say this clearly: you are welcome here.
At Sivlik ADV, we create a learning environment that’s calm, clear, and culturally grounded. We ride where others can’t—not to show off, but to show you what’s possible when you’re supported every step of the way.
